Students' rights at work: resources for curriculum and careers counselling

Here are some websites providing information for students about their rights at work.

ACTU Worksite

The ACTU Worksite is a comprehensive website offering advice and information about work exprience, job-seeking, workplace rights and the role of unions.

There is also some good starting points for tackling school assignments and regular quizzes and competitions.

Work Right is a comprehensive resource from the Teacher Learning Network (TLN) to help young people understand, appreciate and be able to manage workplace culture and their rights and responsibilities at work.

The resource comes in three parts: Teacher Resource, Curriculum Resource and Student Poster. All three are free to download.

A full colour printed copy of the resource is also available from the TLN. Please order online or call 9418 4992 to order a copy. The price is $50.00 per manual including postage and handling (GST included).

Buck the Bully iPhone app

Developed by the ACTU, the Buck the Bully app is aimed at Australian secondary school students aged 15-17 years starting their first job. It gives young people the tools to recognise and deal with workplace bullying.

Victorian Young Unionists Network

The Victorian Young Unionists' Network (YUN) is a network of young workers who are union members. The network brings together young unionists from different industries to collectively campaign on issues faced by young people at work.

The YUN aims to:

  • Promote unionism to young people.
  • Engage young activists in campaigns and issues.
  • Focus on industrial and other issues of importance to young workers.
  • Build alliances with community/student organisations with a focus on young people.

It operates under the auspice of the Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC) and is funded by unions who are affiliates of the VTHC.

Union Summer

Union Summer 2012 is a three-week interniship program organised by the Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC). Interns receive training and work experience with a Victorian union to learn skills in advocacy, organising and industrial relations.
