Legal and financial support

Legal Matters leaflet coverAEU membership gives you access to a wide range of financial and legal services through the union and its partners, including free legal advice, credit union membership and superannuation advice.

Working in education is a legal minefield. Employees face the risk of legal action against them on a daily basis in a variety of situations:

  • Potential breaches of the Children's Services Act and Regulations
  • Negligence claims
  • Accidents to students
  • Defamation suits
  • Obligations to report child abuse.

AEU members can receive a free initial legal consultation on any matter, and the union can provide ongoing legal support in work-related matters. The union provides legal cover to members for potential criminal cases, industrial cases, discipline procedures and workcover.

Download the Legal Matters leaflet (PDF 500KB) for more details of the legal cover the AEU provides for members. A court case can cost tens of thousands of dollars to defend.

If you are seeking legal advice about work-related matters, contact the AEU first on (03) 9417 2822 or 1800 013 379. General legal advice is available to union members through a number of solicitors but you must get a referral from the AEU.
