Public Education Campaign

Public schools have a vital role in ensuring every child gets a high quality education. But they are under-resourced. Teachers and parents are joining together to convince the Federal Government to invest more in our public schools.

Today, with a review of schools funding underway, it's even more important that we tell our politicians that Australia needs a public education system that is more than a safety net. We need public education that delivers a guarantee to every child of a high quality education in their local public school.

To do that, we need a funding system that is fair, equitable and recognises the importance of public education and the role it plays in educating all our children.

Why we are campaigning

Australia's public schools are among the best in the world. They deliver high quality education to millions of students every day.

Across the nation, 70% of our children attend a public school, yet they receive only a third of Federal Government funding.

That is why the AEU is running a national campaign, Public Education For Our Future. We are calling on teachers and parents to join together to press for more federal funding for public schools.

Public education is at a critical juncture. The Federal Government has now launched its review to overhaul the current, unfair funding system. It will lead to the creation of a new funding system from 2012 that will last for at least four years — and probably much longer. Education Minister Simon Crean has called this the biggest overhaul of education funding for more than 30 years.

We need your support now to make sure this review delivers more funds for public schools, including the development of new targeted programs to address issues of disadvantage and quality teaching.

Join the campaign and find out more by visiting www.forourfuture.org.au. Make your voice heard by emailing the Prime Minister and getting involved with local activities at your school.

Together, the parents and teachers of 2.2 million Australian public school students can make a difference.
