We negotiate our salaries and conditions through the union
As a first year beginning teacher in a government school‚ you get the best starting salary in Australia‚ at $56,984 (as of 1 January 2012). It was negotiated by your union‚ the AEU. You'll get time off from face-to-face teaching - also negotiated by the AEU. As an AEU member‚ you have a say in what we negotiate and are provided with constant updates of where we are up to.
The AEU provides professional advice and assistance
We help you to apply for positions in government schools. You will gain access to a wide range of PD run or organised by the AEU including student and graduate teacher conferences‚ and workshops to help you gain employment. To find out about these go to our What's On page.
The AEU supports you in the workplace
You receive immediate assistance in all professional and industrial matters. Every workplace has an AEU rep and we help you to organise staff at your school so that you have an effective sub-branch. The union has an extensive membership support service which is only a phone call away - just dial (03) 9417 2822.
The AEU gives you legal protection
This is an extremely important benefit in an increasingly litigious society. The protection is in accordance with our current legal policy. Make sure that you call us well before an issue gets to this stage.
