Why Should You Join?
Being a member of the AEU provides a host of benefits. We make your life easier.
Immediate Assistance
Call at any time to talk to our Membership Services Unit for immediate advice and assistance on anything from your entitlements under your agreement to claiming WorkCover. Our MSU officers can help with questions on health and safety, disciplinary issues and complaints, leave entitlements, contract and casual work, superannuation, and more.
Whatever your question, if they don't know the answer, they'll know someone who does.
Representing you at work
The AEU can take up with your employer or management any problems you might experience at work. We provide prompt answers and advice and effectively pursue matters on your behalf.
Representing you at large
It's the AEU that negotiates the awards and agreements that benefit all teachers and educators. The AEU has won and protected many benefits over the years - but only AEU members can turn to the union for help if those terms and conditions and breached or threatened. And as we negotiate new agreements in schools, in TAFE, AMES and disability services, we need your support so we can support you.
The AEU is also a major voice in the national education debate, speaking out on major issues, contributing to debates and commissioning research. And as one of the largest members of the ACTU, we stand up for all Australian workers.
Legal advice and representation
Legal advice and representation can be expensive. AEU lawyers can provide free, comprehensive legal support and representation for financial members in disciplinary and other work-related matters. As a member, you're also entitled to a free initial legal consultation on any matter.
Professional Support
The AEU is a leading provider of training, both industrial and professional. Members can take our AEU Active course to learn how to stand up for your rights in your workplace. Through our partners, TLN and
VELC, we provide a wide range of professional development courses in all sectors. And we offer training and support in applying for jobs and preparing for leadership.
Our New Educators Network offers support and a forum for discussion for members in their first four years of teaching. Our association AEU Principals caters for the needs of our members in school leadership positions. And our officers can offer all members advice and help with professional and curriculum matters. The AEU also makes representations on educational and professional matters statewide and nationally.
Most of all, membership of the AEU makes you part of a body of more than 100,000 educators across Australia.
Keeping you informed
The AEU keeps you up-to-date with the latest union and professional news. Our 32-page magazine, AEU News, comes out twice-a-term, packed with news, features and columns. Our termly newsletters keep you informed of developments in your sector. You can subscribe to our fortnightly campaigning e-Newsletter or check for updates on this website. And our professional journal, Professional Voice contributes to the national debate about issues in education. All these publications are free to members.
