Student teachers

Your involvement with the AEU can start when you're still a student.

Student membership is FREE and brings a host of benefits, networking opportunities, targeted training and PD and help with finding that first job. Not a member yet? Join now!

Membership gives you professional support‚ industrial advice‚ legal protection during school experience rounds‚ library access and eligibility to join Teachers Health Fund. Twice a year, 4000 copies of the AEU's Graduate Newsletter are distributed to teaching students, featuring practical information about how to get a job‚ interviews‚ pay rates and articles on other topical issues for graduating teachers.

AEU officers regularly visit all universities to talk to students about the role of the union and deliver lectures on teachers and the law and other educational issues. To arrange a campus visit, email our graduates organiser, Andrew Cassidy.

The AEU is a major provider of professional development for new teachers. Every April and October, we hold a Student Teacher Conference, with a full day of guest speakers and practical, well-targeted workshops and a chance to network with your peers.

In September, we give final year students a chance to meet our principal members to get the inside story on what schools are looking for in their new recruits and get advice on landing that first job. Our popular PD in the Pub sessions offer more hands-on tips — and a free beer — for student and graduate members.

Plus, we offer workshops on using Recruitment Online‚ job applications‚ answering selection criteria and interview skills.

Don't forget our New Educators' Network or our NEN facebook group.

Joining the AEU is the best move you can make as a student teacher. To find out more, email our graduates and student teacher organiser Andrew Cassidy or call him on (03) 9417 2822.
