Early childhood curriculum frameworks
For the first time, Victorian early childhood practitioners are implementing a common curriculum framework.
Two curriculum documents have been developed for use across the sector:
- A Commonwealth framework (Early Years Learning Framework 0-5 years) and
- A Victorian framework (Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework 0-8 years).
These two frameworks are designed to complement one another and support professionals in their work with children, families and colleagues. Professional development opportunities are now available for the sector and information can be found here.
Note: The national schools curriculum currently being developed by the Australian Curriculum and Assessment Reporting Authority (ACARA) is a framework for schools from Prep to Year 10. While it has been described as a "K–10" framework, kindergarten in other states and territories refers to what is known in Victoria as Prep Year.
This confusion has understandably caused some concern. Members can be assured that we already have our own curriculum frameworks and this school curriculum will not apply to the early childhood sector.
