With federal funding for 15 hours of preschool education only locked to the end of 2019, we are on the federal government to make the funding permanent, once and for all.
Since its introduction in 2013, funding for universal access has constantly been under threat, with federal governments taking a piecemeal approach to funding every 12-18 months. This is an unfair situation for children, families and educators.
Why are we campaigning?
95% of four-year-olds in Australia are enrolled in a government-funded program of 15 hours per week of preschool.
But this is under threat from the federal government, which won’t guarantee its share of the funding beyond 2019.
Preschool is vital for a child’s development because it gives them the social and educational skills they need to achieve at school.
That’s why the AEU is calling on the federal government to secure ongoing funding for preschools and end the uncertainty facing parents and staff.
