The Australian Education Union (Victoria) welcomes the opportunity to make a submission to the Victorian parliamentary inquiry into career advice activities in Victorian Schools.

This important area of secondary school operation needs to be better resourced and have its status upgraded and we see the inquiry as having the potential to identify the specific areas of concern and investigate and analyse how these concerns can be addressed.

Our submission is informed by feedback from school careers advisors and teachers from government secondary schools in metropolitan, regional and rural locations.

The picture of careers education they paint is a patchwork of some very successful programs and many others where a lack of resources limits their effectiveness.

Our expectation is that any outcomes of the Inquiry would be designed to enhance the capacity of all government schools to provide the best possible career programs for their students.
