The Australian Education Union (AEU) and Independent Education Union (IEU) jointly denounce the Turnbull Government’s cruel and inhumane treatment of vulnerable families seeking safety and asylum in Australia.

The AEU and IEU stand strong in their conviction that all children have a right to an education. The AEU and IEU have written to Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and Deputy Premier James Merlino directly, calling on them to demand Malcolm Turnbull give full resettlement rights to people seeking asylum already in our community and close offshore camps for good.

The Fair Work Commission has given the Australian Education Union’s new enterprise agreement for public school staff the tick of approval, with new conditions to come into effect from 22 August.

Meredith Peace, President of the Australian Education Union Victorian Branch said the agreement delivers much-needed relief for school staff stuck in a cycle of unreasonable overtime.

“Members of the teaching profession are dedicated, energetic and hardworking contributors to Victorian communities,” said Ms Peace.   

The Australian Education Union Victorian Branch today welcomes the Andrews government’s reform of school cleaning arrangements for Victoria’s public schools.

The Andrews government will now centrally administer school cleaning contracts and have greater oversight of school cleaning arrangements, thus reducing the workload of principals.

Today’s announcement that the Turnbull Government will extend preschool funding to the end of 2018 won’t end the sector’s long-term uncertainty.

AEU acting federal president Meredith Peace said Malcolm Turnbull needed to make a long-term commitment to funding 15 hours of preschool for every four-year-old.

"Quality early childhood education sets students up to succeed. What preschools around the country need is long-term investment and funding certainty,” Peace said.

On April 28, we remember all those workers who have been injured or killed at work and renew the call for safe workplaces. 

This year, 31 Australians have been killed at work. Last year, 190 Australians were killed at work. Many more have sustained injuries or illness simply by being at work and doing their job.

AEU Victoria has secured a new Enterprise Agreement for government school staff, winning significant improvements to address the workload crisis, the high levels of insecure employment and better pay for Victorian teachers, principals and support staff.

Victorian teachers, principals and education support staff have resolved to take steps towards protected industrial action towards reaching an acceptable enterprise agreement.

Whilst negotiations have been constructive over the past 11 months, the Andrews government has failed to adequately address our claims regarding the excessive and unsustainable workloads of school staff.
