Supporting the School Strike 4 Climate

The AEU Victoria website will be offline for maintenance on Friday 28th February 2020 between 5.00pm and 10:00pm.

AEU Branch Council has unanimously passed a motion to commend the students who participated in the climate strikes of November 2018 and March 2019. We are also sending a delegation to the forthcoming rally on Friday 20 September.

We encourage members to show solidarity by participating in one or more of the suggested ideas below which have been proposed by the students:

  1. Apply for a form of approved leave in order to attend the strike
  2. Organise a workplace action to show solidarity, such as printing a placard and taking a photo for social media
  3. Pass a resolution of solidarity from your sub-branch.

Details for the Melbourne rally:

When: Friday 20 September, 2-4pm
Where: Treasury Gardens, 2-18 Spring St Melbourne

There will be two meeting times for AEU members:

  • 1:00pm at Trades Hall, to join with fellow unionists and walk up to the rally together
  • 1:45pm at Burston Reserve, cnr Macarthur St and St Andrews Place.

Wear your AEU t-shirt if you have one, or another red shirt.

For staff wishing to attend the rally, the sub-branch should discuss arrangements with the principal, including approved attendance as part of normal school activities, or a form of approved leave. Principals have the delegated authority to approve leave for staff. Where any leave is unpaid, the sub-branch may wish to consider contributing to any loss of wages for their members, either through sub-branch funds or individual donations. Alternatively, sub-branch members could make arrangements to cover the classes of colleagues.

Students have also asked that schools and teachers consider avoiding the scheduling of key activities and the delivery of important information on the day of the climate strike, particularly for senior secondary students, for example:

  • SACs and practice SACs
  • holiday homework
  • course and topic information and advice.

A number of regional events have also been organised. RSVP to your nearest one here:
